Syncrude Heavy Equipment Operator

Heavy equipment operators drive and operate many different types of equipment including: heavy hauler trucks, crawler dozers, graders, hydraulic and electric shovels, as well as other heavy equipment up to 400 tons.

The Syncrude Heavy Equipment Operator Program is a two week classroom training program to prepare women to begin their careers as a heavy equipment operator. This is a competitive program, with 16 seats available, and tuition is covered by Syncrude for successful applicants. Classroom training consists of two weeks in Fort McMurray, followed by fully paid, hands-on field training with Syncrude starting in January.

The outcomes of the program are to: 

  • Introduce students to the Syncrude and the oil sands mining industry.

  • Provide students with the necessary safety training and safety awareness expected by Syncrude.

  • Provide students with a realistic understanding of the work performed by a Heavy Equipment Operator, Best Practices for Working in Construction and how to succeed in building a career in this occupation.

  • Provide hands-on career development training that will enable students to compete successfully for jobs.

  • Provide job retention support for the graduate and the employer.

  • Provide financial preparedness instruction to guide the student to plan achieve financial goals.

During the 364 day co-op, participants will have on-going coaching from WBF to support retention and long term success. 

Certificates included with this program:

  • Standard First Aid - CPR A & AED

  • CSTS &WHMIS

  • Fire Extinguisher Training

  • (CSO) Common Safety Orientation

Applications requirements include:

  • Proof of residency for Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Current Resume

  • Career Investigation Report (2 interviews)

  • Class 5 AB DL (WBR Address)

  • Online Assessments (ESG)

  • Successfully pass drug, alcohol and fitness testing

  • Test of Workplace Essential Skills
